Mandela Day 2019
Thursday, July 18, 2019
Graceland celebrated Mandela Day 2019 at the Siyacathula Day Care Centre which houses orphaned children and also provides a day cares service.
The day was spent with the team painting classrooms to promote learning, fixing the lighting (electricity) fixtures to make it safer and brighter for the children, changing the taps in the kitchen which assisted in conserving water and making it easier to prepare meals for the children.
The Graceland team also visited 10 schools in the Embalenhle, Bethal and Leandra areas over Mandela week to educate the teachers and Grade 12 female learners about the MyOwnCup.
The MyOwnCup project replaces a sanitary pad which for most underprivileged is a monthly expense which most struggle to afford. It also promotes wellbeing and health of young girls and is also environmentally friendly and cost effective.
The MyOwnCup initiative kicked off last year with the Grade 7 female learners receiving the cups. A total of 750 MyOwnCups was handed this year out valued at R144 000.
